20 YouTube Videos & 1 set of seventeen 12-minute BetaMax Video Cassettes

In the spring of 2011 NIGHTMARE CITY reshot a script lifted from the British sci-fi/fantasy television program Sapphire and Steel in the haunted landscape of the Marin Headlands outside of San Francisco, California. Instigating notions of the original and the copy, spatialized understandings of time and technological obsolescence, NIGHTMARE CITY invited five pairs of friends to enact the roles of the titular main characters. The script was divided into five sections; each of the pairs interchangeably enacting Sapphire and Steel, two interdimensional time-detectives. The two Nightmares, Carol Anne & Keturah, were composited to portray the roles of the supporting characters, who each represent a misunderstanding of irregularities in the nature of time. in this narrative instance, the irregularity is misnamed as a "haunting" through the supporting characters’ own cognitive limitations. The footage recorded during these sessions was paired with the original audio from the television program, the image and audio stuttering in forced congruence: when the progress of the moving image advances beyond the pace of the audio track, the moving image track stutters in order to allow the audio track to catch up and vice versa. This 3 hour video was rescanned from the monitor using an obsolete 1960s broadcast camera, which lends to the work its particularly soft, blurry and luminously spectral aesthetic. When the subsequent video was then uploaded to YouTube, metadata identical to another user’s upload of the original program was inputted. Limited to 10-minute segments enforced by the YouTube interface, the story arch was divided into 20 clips. Each 10-minute clip was then digitally recorded to HD video, the video rescanned within the skin of the YouTube user-interface (UI). This digital footage was then converted to analog and exported to seventeen 12-minute BetaMax tapes-- consumer-level analog videocassettes that use magnetic tape recording technology developed to rival the VHS format in the 1980s. ;

a touring video program of recent Bay Area shorts curated by Nightmare City Harkening back to the tripped out psychedelic lightshows of San Francisco’s 1960s counter culture as well as early Beat Generation experiments in stop motion animation, the artists included in Not Free, Not Dead pay homage to the Bay Area’s rich relationship with the moving image while simultaneously transcribing their fragmented technological experience onto these varied strategies and materials. Ranging from narrative to music video to experimental – these mixed shorts are united by a visual vernacular specific to California. Cobbled together from internet search words, these kaleidoscopic fragments are informed equally by subculture, the Bay Area’s rich underground film and video history as well as Hollywood’s cult classics and formulaic genres. These hazy dreamlike states are populated by rock-and-roll devil horns, hang-loose hands and smiley faces floating freely alongside processed clips appropriated from major motion pictures. In the winter time, when deep snow lay on the ground a poor boy was forced to go out on a sledge to fetch wood. When he had it gathered together and packed it he wished, as he was so frozen with cold not to go home at once but to light a fire and warm himself a little. So he scraped away the snow and as he was thus claring the ground he found a tiny gold key. Hereupon he thought that where the key wasd the lock must be also and dug in the ground and found an iron chest. Title:  “Tickets to Oblivion”

Explanation:

“Tickets to Oblivion” is a site-specific installation consisting of excessive layering of empty iconic images intended to discombobulate and overwhelm the viewer, hopefully challenging understood notions of perception and vision.  The space needed for the installation is flexible. However, a minimum of 100 square feet of interior space is necessary.  The components of the piece are as follows:

• text-based black on black paintings and flags
• poster-sized black and white Xeroxed magazine covers of tragic icons like River Phoenix, Princess Diana, Kurt Cobain, Bobby Kennedy, Karen Carpenter, Heath Ledger, Christopher Reeve, Ernest Hemmingway, etc.
• DIY lenticular panels

            Lenticular panels simulate animation by causing the image to move             when the viewing angle is changed –in a sense this is a literal

            manifestation of the parallax view. They are typically used as cheap             promotional items or as billboards (ie advertisements).  Materially,

            they are two or more flat images interlaced and presented behind a

            lenticular sheet (ridged plastic or resin made up of a series of

            lenticular lenses). We intend to use this lenticular technology to

            inflict a sort of non-violent violence. For example, the iconic figures                   in these images may shift their eyes, blink, wink, or experience                   atrophy or trauma to the eyeball (ie, pin-point or dilated pupils or                   black/sunken eyes).

• Make-shift 3D layering

            We will utilize 3D plastic sheeting to create an effect that is usually                  experienced by a viewer only through 3D glasses. The images will

            be washed in either red or blue to amplify this reference.

• Giant string art

            Red and blue string art will originate from the icons’ eyeballs,                   physically disrupting the viewer's experience of the space.  The                   twine will terminate on the floor and transform in to text, which will                   directly mirror the text featured on the magazine covers.

The placement of the individual components will ultimately create an almost unnavigable web of meaningless reiterations of iconic images.  The paintings and flags will hang vertically from the ceiling, obscuring the other elements and limiting the viewer’s ability to move freely through the space.  The string art will further limit movement, and the lenticular and 3-D panels will subtly alter the viewer’s perception of the familiar iconic images.  We hope that the final effect will be one of disorientation for the viewer, short-circuiting his/her habits of passive viewing and understanding.

LET'S COMPARE

I know we've only known each other four weeks and three days, but to me it seems like nine weeks and five days. The first day seemed like a week and the second day seemed like five days. And the third day seemed like a week again and the fourth day seemed like eight days. And the fifth day you went to see your mother and that seemed just like a day, and then you came back and later on the sixth day, in the evening, when we saw each other, that started seeming like two days, so in the evening it seemed like two days spilling over into the next day and that started seeming like four days, so at the end of the sixth day on into the seventh day, it seemed like a total of five days. And the sixth day seemed like a week and a half. I have it written down, but I can show it to you tomorrow if you want to see it.

Well mom, remember my dream of owning a big house on a hill and how I used to wish for a living room with a plaster lion in it from Mexico and how I always wanted a large twenty four seat dining table in a dining room with original oil paintings by Michelangelo and Rembrandt and remember how I always wanted a rotating bed with pink chiffon and zebra stripes and remember how I used to chit chat with dad about always wanting a bathtub shaped like a clam and an office with orange and white stripes and remember how much I wanted an all red billiard room with a giant stuffed camel and how I wanted a disco room with my own disco dancers and a party room with fancy friends and remember how much I wanted a big backyard with Grecian statues, s-shaped hedges and three swimming pools? Well, I got that too. Marie and I are getting along swell, but I've got a lot to learn about handling my money and banks. You have to be careful. Poor Hobart. A: Death Metal in Scandinavia has been connected with the burning of many churches. Since 1992 there have been at least 45 to 60 church fires, near-fires, and attempted arson attacks in Norway alone. Roughly a third have a documented connection to the Black Metal scene (Lords of Chaos, p. 79). In every case that has been solved, the Kripos (Norwegian national investigation department) found that the arsonists were Black Metal "Satanists." A fire fighter was killed while battling one of the blazes. Black Metal rocker Varg Vikernes (1973- ), who is strongly suspected of setting the first fire in 1992, of an ancient church building in Fantoft, Norway, is in prison for 21 years for the murder of Oystein Aarseth and for setting other church fires. There were roughly a dozen church fires in Germany from late 1993 to early 1997. Most have a proven link to Black Metal and Satanism. you see?

03 september-- NEON PUTRID PRESS RELEASE

B. Peters and P. Sturges, almost forgotten geniuses of the silver screen, one night found each other amidst the glittering putrescence of the gutter. While their tears and tequila dripped eloquently in to the garbage, vomit, and raw sewage, they began to howl a deep, raw, guttural ballad. Almost simultaneously, a broken keyboard, snare drum, and burned out bass cascaded from the heavens. The angels yelled "shut the fuck up!", stray dogs and cats screamed in agreement, and the crackheads moved their ghetto blaster dance party to the next block. Using the broken, angelic instruments, B. Peters and P. Sturges built a castle on top of a pop skeleton.
